In the modern world, the ability to look busy is almost as valuable as the ability to actually work. Sometimes even more valuable. While others exhaust themselves with real tasks, you can peacefully spend the day doing absolutely nothing — as long as you look convincing enough.
Here are a few proven techniques:
First — always carry a cup of coffee or a bottle of water. People who hold something in their hands automatically look like they have a mission. If you walk around empty-handed, you look free. If you’re holding coffee — you look busy.
Second — stare intensely at your phone or laptop. Nod from time to time. Occasionally frown slightly, as if you’re reading something important. If someone approaches, raise one eyebrow and quietly say “one second.” Then keep staring at the screen for another two minutes before looking up.
Third — use phrases like “I’m just finishing something” or “I’m in the middle of something urgent right now.” No one ever asks what that “something” actually is. They simply nod with respect and walk away.

Fourth — walk around the office or the house with a fast, purposeful stride. People who walk slowly look idle. People who walk quickly — even if they’re only going to the bathroom — look like they’re saving the world.
Fifth — keep several tabs open in your browser. Even if they’re pancake recipes and cat videos, from the outside you look like someone juggling ten projects at once.
And most importantly — never admit that you have nothing to do. Silence and a slight sense of hurry are your best friends.
With these simple tricks you can spend an entire day in complete peace while everyone around you is convinced you’re the busiest person in the room.
And when the day is over, you can calmly tell yourself: “I was extremely productive today.” Even if you accomplished absolutely nothing.
